Veterinary coaching – what’s it all about? How’s it going to help me?
Welcome to July’s Newsletter
Hi, it’s Adrian from Emerge Veterinary here and today I’m going to try and help out those who might be wanting to know a bit more about what coaching is, or just as importantly, isn’t.
Let’s suppose you know something isn’t quite right in your life, whether it’s your veterinary career or personal life – maybe you’re feeling lost, stuck or a bit ‘all at sea’? It’s quite common, so don’t worry because there are various ways to move forward and coaching is one of the best.
Check out the article and short video and if you like what I’ve explained, book a free 45-minute coaching exploration with me, here at Emerge. It’s free and no obligation, so what’s to lose?
Thanks for reading and if you know someone who might benefit, why not forward them the email or encourage them to subscribe to the Emerge newsletter for coaching and personal development tips?
Best wishes, Adrian
So, what’s the deal with coaching?
I’m stuck.
I’m flat out going nowhere and it’s frustrating as hell.
Is this it? Is this what five years at vet school and a bunch of years in practice gets me?
It’s not floating my boat any more.
What on earth can I do if I’m not a real vet in practice?
Does any of that sound familiar? If you’re thinking any of these things, I can reassure you of two things. Firstly, you’re not alone, it’s a common thought process for vets at any stage of their career. Secondly, there are ways to answer all of these questions and coaching is one of them.
Maybe you’ve been hearing about coaching and that it’s a good thing to do, yet don’t really understand what it entails or what the process is? That’s something my clients say to me quite frequently, because the term ‘coach’ is used interchangeably with trainer, mentor and advisor and that causes confusion. And then there’s counselling, where does that fit?
Let me try and clarify what coaching is and just as importantly, what it isn’t.
Coaching is a future goal-oriented process, where the coach helps support learning, change perspective and explore options to move forward towards that goal. The coach will not advise (that’s consultancy), offer their experience (that’s mentoring) and they won’t help you come to terms with or heal past experiences either because that’s counselling.
Coaching is confidential, only people you tell will know you’re being coached. However, it’s likely they’re going to notice something has changed, because you’ll be more confident, more focused, motivated and with great direction.
A coach will help you find your own solutions, because accountability for success rests with you – nothing in life is guaranteed. They won’t advise, because if you follow the advice and it works, they’re the hero; if not, they’re the villain. Either way, it’s their solution, not yours.
The agenda rests firmly with the client and although the coaching might introduce tools, exercises or coaching processes, the client is always in control of the direction they want to take and the success they find when they reach their goal.
